Setting up the Garmin GPSmap 76 for XC League

Part 1: Setting up the GPS

Begin with the Setup pages, which you get to from the Main Menu (from any page, hit MENU, and the MENU again.)

Begin by scrolling to the Units tab. It is helpful if everyone is using the same units for distances and elevation.
Scroll one tab right, to Location. You must set up your Garmin in this way: It helps with retrieves and makes sure you pass through the waypoints.
The next tab is Alarms. This is optional, but some find it helpful. Since you only need to fly to within one quarter mile of most waypoints, you can set the Garmin to beep and give a message. Set Approach and Arrival to Distance, and then set the distance to .25 mi
Now press QUIT to return to the main menu, and select Tracks to set up your track log.
Although you can choose to save track logs, they are not used in scoring-- the full current log is downloaded immediately after the comp. (So you should Clear your track log prior to every comp flight.)
Press MENU, then choose Setup Track Log

Set as shown:

Recording: Stop when full

Record Method: Time

Track Interval: 3 seconds is good.

Press QUIT to return to the Main Menu, and choose Routes

Press MENU and choose Setup Routes.

Set Waypoint Transition to Manual. This is not documented in some of the Garmin manuals but it is very important, as it allows you to decide when you want to head to the next waypoint, rather than the Garmin deciding for you.

Next: Downloading waypoints and creating & navigating a route.
